Travel in the valley
The Matter Valley is one of the few places in the Alps where the car-free culture is part of the experience rather than an inconvenience. Whether you’re heading up to Zermatt or over to Saas Fee, the journey through the valley is straightforward and for most visitors, the train is the easiest and most enjoyable way to travel. Below you’ll find everything you need to know about getting around, whether you’re arriving by rail or road.
Getting to Zermatt by train
There are two trains an hour from Visp (through St Niklaus and Täsch) to Zermatt.
The Täsch to Zermatt shuttle
This takes just 12 minutes and runs every 20 minutes throughout the day.
A return ticket costs 17chf (cheaper for children or with travelcards etc)
Getting to Zermatt by car
If you drive up the valley, you cannot take your vehicle beyond Täsch. It’s a private road from here to Zermatt and large fines are handed out for anyone driving this section without a permit.
The main Matterhorn Terminal parking at the train station costs approximately 16chf per day and everyone takes the shuttle trains to Zermatt from there.
Alternatively, some parking and taxi services in Täsch provide a more convenient (and cost effective option) for groups. You park your car and jump in a taxi that can take you to the edge of Zermatt village. Try these:
Getting to Saas Fee by train / bus
Take the train to Stalden and the bus from there up the Saas valley to Saas Balen, Saas Grund and Saas Fee.
Getting to Saas Fee by car
Drive down the valley and turn right at the roundabout outside Stalden.
The main parking is in the heart of Saas Fee and a short walk from the tourist office and lift stations.
